A contract for the removal of asbestos, lead, and other contaminants at 20 Cable Beach Road East has been extended and increased to nearly $3 million due to the discovery of more contamination than initially expected. Originally valued at $1,196,000, the contract with Site Environmental and Remediation Services WA was augmented by $929,000 in June, and further funding was approved by the Shire of Broome council on November 3. Excavations revealed additional waste materials from historical landfills, necessitating the extension. The Shire emphasized ongoing air monitoring and adherence to safety regulations throughout the remediation process.
