A jury has found James Lake-Kusviandy Blee, 24, guilty of attempting to possess a commercial quantity of cocaine after a failed drug retrieval operation on May 9, 2022. Blee conspired with his father, James Lake Blee, and two Brazilian divers to acquire a 57kg package of cocaine hidden in the hull of the cargo ship Arti Gr Majura, which had arrived at the Port of Newcastle. During the operation, one diver drowned, while the other fled and remains at large. The police discovered a package containing nearly 35kg of pure cocaine washed up on Kooragang Island. Blee Jr. claimed he was unaware of the drug plot, stating he thought he was assisting his father. His bail was revoked, and he is set to be sentenced on July 24. James Lake Blee was previously sentenced to 11 years and three months in prison for his role in the scheme, with parole eligibility after seven years and six months.

Why It Matters

The conviction of James Lake-Kusviandy Blee highlights ongoing issues related to drug trafficking and organized crime in Australia. The incident is part of a broader trend of increased narcotics smuggling attempts into the country, which authorities have been working to combat through enhanced law enforcement measures. The case also underscores the dangers involved in drug retrieval operations, as evidenced by the death of one diver and the ongoing search for another. Additionally, financial pressures from the COVID-19 pandemic have been linked to increased criminal activities, as seen in the motivations behind James Lake Blee’s involvement in the drug plot.
