Eighteen Senegal fans were detained following the AFCON final in Morocco on January 18 and were sentenced on Thursday.

The Senegalese Football Federation criticized the sentencing of 18 fans to prison terms of 3 to 12 months for hooliganism during the AFCON final, calling it “incomprehensibly harsh.” The fans had been in pre-trial detention since the final, where they attempted a pitch invasion and threw objects onto the field. The sentences sparked outrage, with claims of disproportionate treatment compared to incidents in other stadiums worldwide. Defense attorney Patrick Kabou described the verdict as “incomprehensible,” asserting the fans were victims.
