Senate report slams airlines for raking in billions in seat fees

In a scathing report, a Senate subcommittee criticized major U.S. airlines for generating $12.4 billion in seating fees between 2018 and 2023, including charges for extra legroom and preferred seats. United Airlines led the pack with $1.3 billion in seating fee revenue last year, surpassing checked bag fees for the first time in recent years. While some carriers have eliminated ticket change fees, they have offset this by charging for premium seats and increasing the number of these seats to boost revenue.
