Gunner Sebastian Halmagean, 24, from Hamilton, died during his first deployment in Latvia, where he was fulfilling his dream of serving in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). His father, Alin Halmagean, expressed pride in his son’s dedication to the CAF and his service during emergencies, including firefighting in Newfoundland and Labrador. Halmagean’s death, currently under investigation, has been described as a tragedy by local MP Ned Kuruc, who knew him since childhood. He was a part of Operation Reassurance, contributing to NATO’s defense efforts in Eastern Europe.
