Russia’s anti-Putin movement plans to use force to remove the leader

An underground Russian resistance group, Black Spark, is advocating for the overthrow of President Vladimir Putin through armed conflict. Led by Igor Volobuev, a former Gazprombank vice president who defected to Ukraine after the Russian invasion, the group claims to be establishing a network of professionals, activists, and soldiers within Russia. Volobuev asserts that discontent is growing among Putin’s elite, and he believes that armed resistance is necessary, as dialogue is no longer viable under a dictatorship. Black Spark’s manifesto condemns Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and seeks not only to remove Putin but to dismantle the Russian state itself. Despite a limited social media presence, the group claims to have influential members within Russia, including individuals linked to Gazprom, and is focused on sabotaging the oil industry, which they view as vital to Russia’s economy.

Why It Matters

The emergence of Black Spark highlights growing dissent within Russia against Putin’s regime, particularly in the wake of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Historical patterns show that significant political change in Russia often arises from internal discontent, particularly among the elite and educated classes. The involvement of former high-ranking officials like Volobuev suggests a potential shift in the dynamics of opposition to Putin. Additionally, the group’s focus on armed resistance reflects the increasing frustration with the Russian government’s actions, both domestically and internationally, as well as the potential for civil unrest as the war continues to strain the country’s resources and morale.
