Russia to Compete in Inaugural U-15 World Cup

FIFA has announced that its inaugural U-15 World Cup and Festival, scheduled to take place in Azerbaijan in October, will be open to all member associations, including Russia. This marks the first time Russian teams may participate in a FIFA event since the country’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine. The competition will kick off on October 22 and feature boys’ teams from all FIFA member associations, with future editions including girls’ teams as well. Despite FIFA lifting the ban on Russia’s U-17 teams, they have been absent from tournaments due to ongoing boycotts by several European countries.

Why It Matters

The decision to include Russian teams in the U-15 World Cup signifies a potential return to international competition for the country following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. This move by FIFA opens up opportunities for Russian youth players to participate in global football events and marks a significant step towards normalization in the sporting world. The inclusion of both boys’ and girls’ teams in future editions of the tournament highlights FIFA’s commitment to promoting gender equality and youth development in football.
