In a 2024 podcast interview, Richard Gere admitted he initially struggled to see his character’s complexity in Pretty Woman as a businessman who hires a sex worker, but was convinced to take the role by co-star Julia Roberts. Julia herself almost lost the role when the original studio went bankrupt, but director Garry Marshall fought for her to stay on the project.
