In a 2024 podcast interview, Richard Gere admitted he initially struggled to see his character’s complexity in Pretty Woman as a businessman who hires a sex worker, but was convinced to take the role by co-star Julia Roberts. Julia herself almost lost the role when the original studio went bankrupt, but director Garry Marshall fought for her to stay on the project. Ultimately, both Gere and Roberts starred in the iconic film that became a box office hit.
