Rail workers narrowly avoid being struck by London train

Three railway workers narrowly escaped being struck by a London passenger train while working in a tunnel near Bookham station, Surrey, on April 29, 2022. The workers, with over 90 years of combined experience, mistakenly walked into a section where trains were not supposed to be operating, resulting in a near-miss with a train traveling at 33 mph. The driver of the South Western Railway train, which was approaching from London Waterloo, sounded the horn just seconds before reaching the workers, who had limited time to react due to the train’s speed and the tunnel’s curvature. An investigation by the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) revealed that the safety plans contained incorrect information about the line blockage, which went unnoticed despite multiple checks during the planning stages.

Why It Matters

This incident underscores the critical importance of accurate safety protocols within railway operations. Prior errors in safety planning have previously resulted in tragic accidents, including a recent fatality in Hertfordshire. The RAIB’s findings highlight that the safety of track work increasingly relies on workers’ understanding of complex safety measures, emphasizing the need for continual improvements in railway safety practices to prevent future near-misses and ensure the well-being of railway workers.
