In Banda Aceh, Indonesia, people gathered to pray and visit mass graves to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami that killed around 230,000 people across several countries, with over 170,000 deaths in Indonesia alone. The region has since rebuilt its infrastructure to be more resilient and has installed early warning systems to improve preparedness for future disasters, thanks to the support of international donors. The tsunami also had a significant impact on Thailand, claiming over 8,000 lives and leaving nearly 400 bodies unidentified and unclaimed, marking a tragic chapter in the nation’s history.
