Judge Rules Jail Time Required in P.E.I. Infanticide Case

A Charlottetown woman, Cassie Acorn, was sentenced to one year in jail for infanticide after pleading guilty to causing the death of her three-month-old daughter, Winter. Acorn inflicted fatal injuries on the baby during a moment of distress linked to her postpartum depression. The judge emphasized the need for a real jail sentence to uphold public confidence in the justice system, despite acknowledging Acorn’s tragic circumstances as an abuse survivor. Following her release, Acorn will be on probation for two years and must provide a DNA sample for a national database.
