On November 28, 2025, over 1,600 civilians fled Kertala in South Kordofan due to escalating violence from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), as reported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). This displacement was part of a broader conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army that has resulted in at least 40,000 deaths and displaced 12 million since April 2023. The RSF’s control extends over most of Darfur, while the army maintains authority in other regions, including the capital, Khartoum. Neighboring Chad has become a refuge for many fleeing the ongoing violence.
