Charities urge Government to target smaller websites under Online Safety Act

A group of charities and online safety campaigners have urged the Prime Minister to disregard Ofcom’s advice on categorizing the most dangerous websites under the Online Safety Act, citing concerns that smaller but harmful platforms would evade strict regulation. Ofcom proposed setting the threshold for Category 1 services based on user numbers, potentially excluding dangerous “suicide forums” from oversight. The campaigners recommend using functionality criteria to identify and regulate exceptionally dangerous forums, expressing disappointment in Ofcom’s advice to the Technology Secretary not to address these high-risk sites.
