Ireland, Spain, and Norway join a minority of European countries in recognizing Palestine as an independent state, following the lead of a few Caribbean nations earlier this year. This brings the number of UN members that recognize Palestine to 143 out of 193.

On May 10, the UN general assembly passed a resolution granting new rights to Palestine and urging the security council to admit it as a full member.
