Niger is set to nationalise the Somair uranium mine operated by French firm Orano, marking a shift from France towards closer ties with Russia following a military coup in 2023. Orano, which owns 63% of the mine, claims Niger’s government is engaging in a policy of asset stripping and intends to seek legal compensation for its operations in the country.
