Drone footage captures orcas hunting stingrays along the coast

A drone captured stunning footage of a pod of orcas hunting stingrays off the south coast of Wellington on Anzac Day. Drone operator Michael Lanzensberger observed a calf, a juvenile, and two adult orcas swimming near Island Bay. The orcas had earlier traveled from Lyall Bay to Princess Beach and then to Houghton Bay, where they were seen interacting with surfers. Lanzensberger positioned his drone at a height of 150 meters to follow the pod’s movements, taking advantage of favorable weather conditions that allowed for a clear view. His footage showcases the orcas’ natural behavior in their habitat.

Why It Matters

Orcas, also known as killer whales, are apex predators and play a crucial role in marine ecosystems. Their hunting behavior provides insight into the health of oceanic food webs, particularly in regions like New Zealand, where these animals are frequently observed. The presence of orcas hunting stingrays indicates the availability of prey and reflects the overall biodiversity of the coastal environment. Such sightings can also raise awareness about marine conservation efforts, as orcas face threats from habitat loss, pollution, and climate change, making the documentation of their behavior essential for ecological studies and conservation initiatives.
