Nearly 8,000 people died or went missing on migration routes in 2025, with over 40% of these incidents occurring on sea routes to Europe, according to the UN’s International Organization for Migration. The report highlights the phenomenon of “invisible shipwrecks,” where boats disappear without a trace.
