Nato membership for Ukraine, return to 2014 borders ‘unrealistic’, says US defence chief

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that Nato membership for Ukraine is unrealistic and urged Kyiv to abandon hopes of returning to pre-2014 borders, suggesting a negotiated settlement with Russia supported by an international troop force. Hegseth emphasized the need for Europe to take on more military and financial responsibilities for Ukraine’s defence, including the possibility of a peacekeeping force without US troops and without Article Five protections if they engage with Russian forces, amid ongoing conflict in Crimea and the Donbas region.
