Japan’s Mitsui OSk Lines (MOL) has increased its LNG dual-fuelled VLCC order count in China by contracting two additional 309,000 dwt newbuilds at Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering (DACKS) for nearly $300m. With more than 20 VLCCs already listed, MOL will now have six additional units set to deliver from DACKS between 2025 and 2028, making it the largest shipping company in Japan in dwt terms. MOL’s order for LNG-fuelled VLCCs in August 2022 marked the end of a record ordering drought for the supertanker sector, followed by another order worth roughly $260m for two more newbuilds in 2023.
