Green Griffons: All-women ranger team fights poaching on the Wild Coast

The Green Griffons, an all-women anti-poaching ranger team, have been established in the Eastern Cape, consisting of nine women from villages around the Mkambati Nature Reserve. Inspired by the Black Mambas in the Greater Kruger area, the team aims to promote conservation awareness and protect local wildlife. Abongile Sodlula, a 26-year-old member of the team, discovered her passion for nature conservation while pursuing her education. The women underwent specialized training to patrol the reserve, gather wildlife data, and engage with local communities about environmental protection. Conservationist Dr. Div de Villiers, who mentored the team, emphasized that the introduction of white rhinos to Mkambati is contingent on eradicating poaching and ensuring community support.

Why It Matters

The formation of the Green Griffons highlights the increasing role of women in conservation efforts in South Africa, particularly in rural areas. Historically, conservation has been male-dominated, but initiatives like this are changing perceptions and empowering local women. The Mkambati Nature Reserve is part of a larger ecosystem that faces challenges from poaching and habitat loss, making effective anti-poaching measures crucial for biodiversity. The effort to introduce white rhinos further underscores the need for community involvement and sustainable wildlife management practices to protect endangered species.
