New images reveal moon crater from SpaceX rocket crash

NASA has released new images showing a crater formed on the Moon’s surface due to the impact of a SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage on August 5, 2026. The images were captured by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter between August 11 and August 12, revealing a 60-foot-wide and 10-foot-deep crater, alongside a dark scar and pale streaks of debris. The Falcon 9 had launched in January 2025, carrying the Firefly Aerospace Blue Ghost 1 lunar lander, and was left in space post-mission. Engineers had to wait six days for the orbiter to capture the crater, which became visible as the lunar surface rotated beneath it. The impact generated energy equivalent to three tons of TNT but did not pose significant damage to the Moon.

Why It Matters

The incident highlights the growing issue of space debris, particularly with the increase in commercial space launches. SpaceX has been responsible for a significant portion of global launches, contributing to the accumulation of space junk. Previous instances, such as a Chinese rocket segment creating craters on the Moon’s far side in 2022, demonstrate that impacts from discarded rocket stages are not uncommon. The continuing presence of space debris raises concerns about the long-term implications for space exploration and the safety of future missions.
