Aqil Fakhr al-Din, a 50-year-old man from Kufa, Iraq, was mauled to death by a lion he had recently purchased, just days after acquiring the animal. The attack occurred as he approached the lion’s cage, leading to fatal injuries, while a neighbor attempted to intervene by shooting the lion with an AK-47, ultimately killing it. Following the incident, al-Din’s body was taken to a hospital, and a police investigation was initiated, highlighting ongoing issues with illegal wildlife trafficking and poor conditions in Iraqi zoos.
