Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny died in a remote Arctic Circle prison camp, leading to the establishment of memorials in Australian cities on the one-year anniversary of his passing. Perth’s St George’s Cathedral features a memorial to Navalny, while Sydney has a bench with his famous quote, “Love is stronger than fear.” Melbourne’s Goldstone Art Gallery will host an exhibition by photojournalist Evgeny Feldman capturing Navalny’s spirit, with hopes of becoming a place for supporters to gather and remember him. Some attempts to organize memorial services with the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia were met with resistance, possibly due to pressure on churches.
