Australia’s Music Industry Bans AI-Generated Tracks From Official Charts

What You Need to Know
• The Australian music industry will prohibit tracks entirely created by artificial intelligence from official charts starting next week.
• A variation of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer,” produced with AI, spent 16 weeks in the Australian top 20.
• The Australian Record Industry Association will also exclude AI-generated music from its prestigious ARIA awards.

Australia’s recorded music industry, represented by the Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA), announced on Tuesday that it will ban tracks completely generated by artificial intelligence from its official charts, effective Monday. This decision follows the success of an AI-produced version of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer,” which peaked at number two on the ARIA top 20 singles chart and remained in the top five for 16 weeks. While wholly AI-generated tracks will be excluded, music that involves human contributions, such as songwriting and performance, will still qualify for the charts and the ARIA awards. ARIA Chief Executive Annabelle Herd emphasized the importance of promoting human artistry in the evolving music landscape.

Why It Matters

The decision by ARIA reflects growing concerns within the music industry regarding the impact of generative AI technologies on artists’ livelihoods. The new rules align with international guidelines from the London-based International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, which state that tracks must be “substantially human made” to qualify for charts. This move aims to protect the integrity of recorded music and ensure that human creativity is prioritized in an era where AI tools are increasingly prevalent in music production.
