Louisiana grandmother charged with giving whiskey to 4-year-old

A Louisiana grandmother, Roxanne Record, 57, is on trial for first-degree murder after allegedly forcing her 4-year-old granddaughter, China Record, to consume a fatal amount of whiskey as a punishment in April 2022. Prosecutors assert that the child was coerced into drinking an entire 750ml bottle of Canadian Mist whiskey, resulting in a blood alcohol content of 0.680, over eight times the legal limit for an adult. Evidence presented in court revealed a troubling pattern of abuse, suggesting the child was treated differently than her siblings and marginalized to the point where her attempts to access basic needs were viewed as theft. While the defense acknowledged the tragic nature of the child’s death, they argued it was an accident and that the prosecution failed to prove intent for a murder conviction. If convicted, Roxanne Record faces a mandatory life sentence without parole. Her daughter, Kadjah Record, is also charged with murder and is slated for trial later this summer.

Why It Matters

This case highlights serious issues surrounding child welfare and domestic abuse, as it reflects the extreme consequences of neglect and maltreatment. According to the National Child Abuse and Neglect Data System, in the United States, more than 600,000 children are victims of abuse or neglect each year. Furthermore, the legal system’s handling of such cases has significant implications for family dynamics and community safety, raising awareness of the need for protective measures for vulnerable children. The outcome of this trial may influence future cases and policies related to child protection and domestic violence.
