Fake doctor Zholia Alemi ordered to pay back thousands or face more jail time

Iranian-Kiwi Zholia Alemi, who faked a medical degree from the University of Auckland, worked as a psychiatrist in the UK for over 20 years, during which she earned approximately $2 million in wages. In 2023, she was sentenced to seven years in prison for her fraud, and a judge has now ordered her to pay nearly $1 million NZD in compensation or face additional prison time. Her deception was uncovered in 2018 when a journalist revealed her qualifications were fraudulent, as she only held a Bachelor of Human Biology from the university.
