In a New Zealand first, staff from the Westland District Council district assets team have designed kea-proof rubbish bins.

The council released a statement this week saying it had come up with the new-look rubbish bins to keep the curious birds away.

“The Department of Conservation approached us about getting some rubbish bins for Franz Josef that kea couldn’t get into,” council operations manager Erle Bencich said.

“We are keen to support Doc’s efforts to keep kea healthy.

“Investigating the market for rubbish bins, we found that none of the bins available were fit for purpose.

“We put our engineering skills to good use and in conjunction with a supplier came up with a lid design that has a spring-loaded door with a narrow aperture which fits on the standard receptacle base.

“The lids and bins were manufactured by Tilley Group Ltd to meet our specific requirements.

“It would be great to see them installed across the country wherever cheeky kea are getting into public rubbish bins.”

Seven of the 240-litre bins with kea-proof lids were installed in Franz Josef this week.

Red flags hindered Liam Lawson's progress during the first qualifying session of the Formula One Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, resulting in a 16th-fastest time at Imola. A crash by Alpine's Franco Colapinto at turn three triggered the red flag, preventing Lawson from improving his time on his second lap and missing advancement by just 0.123 seconds. Lawson expressed disappointment, noting the performance of their fast car and the missed opportunity, particularly after recent races. Full...

SummaryResearchers at the University of Otago estimate that 40,000 New Zealanders are affected by ocular toxoplasmosis, a parasitic infection spread by cats, with 10,000 individuals experiencing severe vision loss. Despite the high infection rates and the identification of promising treatment compounds by Professor Bruce Russell, the development of new therapies is hindered by insufficient funding. This condition poses a significant public health concern, as evidenced by cases like Danielle Wilson, who experienced sudden blurry vision...

Shoppers reported hearing a “boom” as a man ran into the mall; however, police confirmed no shots were fired, and one person was arrested near Cotton On. Gabriel Tuporo, 28, has been ordered to begin serving a two-year and two-month prison sentence after his appeal was dismissed, following a premeditated attack where he intentionally struck his sister’s long-term abusive partner, Hohepa Waipouri, with his car. Justice Timothy Brewer criticized the sentence as "light" considering the seriousness of the crime, which Tuporo committed on Christmas Eve 2023 after enduring years of witnessing the abuse against his sister. Although he was initially allowed to...

A family living in a rental home plagued by mould struggled to move out, as it was the only residence they had ever known with their baby, who tragically died there. The discovery of more mould in two bedrooms prompted them to leave the Waihī property in September, a decision described as “bittersweet” during a Tenancy Tribunal hearing in March, where the woman alleged that the landlord failed to maintain the home according to building...
