Judges slam SFO overreach and oppressive orders – prosecutions now in doubt

The Court of Appeal has criticized the Serious Fraud Office for overreaching in its investigations, leading to the collapse of a long-running fraud case and potentially impacting other prosecutions. The SFO’s misuse of powers included demanding vast amounts of data from individuals and organizations, resulting in a significant amount of evidence being deemed inadmissible. The Court of Appeal called for urgent review of the SFO Act or suggested placing the SFO under the Search and Surveillance Act 2012 due to its indiscriminate and unlawful practices.
