Rubio advises Houthis to avoid involvement in Iran conflict

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the Houthis should refrain from involvement in the Iran conflict, suggesting they were misled into participating by Tehran. Speaking to reporters, Rubio noted that the Houthis had largely avoided the conflict until recently, when they began targeting Saudi Arabia and its maritime interests. He expressed hope for de-escalation, emphasizing that the situation is not favorable. Rubio also criticized Iran’s negotiating practices, asserting that Tehran frequently reneges on agreements or seeks to alter them after the fact. He indicated that while Iran is currently hesitant to negotiate, the high costs they are incurring may soon compel them to engage in talks.

Why It Matters

The Houthis, a Yemeni rebel group backed by Iran, have been involved in the protracted conflict in Yemen, which has drawn in various regional powers, including Saudi Arabia. Their actions in the Middle East are significant as they can affect regional stability and security dynamics. The U.S. has a vested interest in countering Iranian influence, particularly as tensions between the U.S. and Iran remain high following the withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal. Additionally, the ongoing conflict in Yemen has resulted in a humanitarian crisis, making diplomatic resolutions critical for both local and international stakeholders.
