Judge Sharion Aycock ordered special elections for the Mississippi Supreme Court after finding the current electoral map violates the Voting Rights Act. The map, in place since 1987, dilutes the power of Black voters and must be redrawn by the end of the 2026 legislative session. The ACLU’s lawsuit argued the map splits the historically Black Delta region, leading to unequal representation. Once a new map is approved, special elections will be held in November 2026 to address the lack of diversity in the state’s highest court.
