The U.S. Justice Department unsealed indictments on Tuesday against four alleged members of the Jalisco New Generation cartel, also known as CJNG, for attempting to purchase arms and ammunition in exchange for drugs in the Czech Republic. The four individuals were arrested in June, with Edgar Alejandro Lopez Velasco, 44, and Jose Miguel Alvarado Morales, 23, already extradited to the United States, where they appeared in court in Tampa, Florida. The other two defendants, Noe Diaz Jimenez, 33, and Leobardo Gaxiola Lopez, 63, are awaiting extradition. The charges include drug importation conspiracy and firearms trafficking, which could result in life sentences. The Justice Department stated that the defendants planned to use the weapons to commit violence against rival cartels and law enforcement in Mexico.

The Jalisco New Generation cartel is one of Mexico’s most powerful drug trafficking organizations and is designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government. Recent efforts to combat CJNG have intensified, especially following the death of its leader, Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho,” in February.
