Hamas increased torture and interrogations in Gaza since October 2025 ceasefire

Hamas has reportedly intensified its interrogations and torture of Palestinian residents in the Gaza Strip since a ceasefire took effect in October 2025, according to IDF Arabic Spokesperson Lt.-Col. Ella Waweya. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) and Shin Bet, Israel’s security agency, claim that Hamas is enhancing its control over the population through oppressive tactics. Waweya stated that these torture methods target civilians indiscriminately, including minors and women, and are often conducted in public facilities such as schools and hospitals. The IDF alleges that Hamas exploits these civilian structures for military objectives and uses a range of abusive practices, including physical violence and psychological threats, against those summoned for questioning, not just political adversaries. Waweya criticized Hamas for perpetuating a cycle of destruction and suffering within the Gaza Strip.

Why It Matters

Hamas’s actions have significant implications for human rights in the Gaza Strip, where the organization has been in power since 2007. The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has led to widespread humanitarian issues, exacerbated by the blockade of Gaza and intermittent military confrontations. Reports of torture and abuse against civilians highlight the precarious situation faced by residents, who often find themselves caught between the militant group’s authoritarian practices and military actions from Israel. Such conditions contribute to a deteriorating humanitarian landscape in the region, affecting access to essential services and the overall safety of the population.
