Women’s rights activist Mohammadi was arrested in December while attending a memorial ceremony in Mashhad.

Iranian human rights activist and 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been sentenced to over seven years in prison, including six years for gathering and collusion, plus additional sentences for propaganda and exile. Recently ending a week-long hunger strike, she expressed serious health concerns, having been hospitalized but returned to detention. Mohammadi, known for her advocacy against the death penalty and for women’s rights, was arrested after condemning a lawyer’s death. Her lawyers are considering an appeal against the verdict.
