Inuit Christmas Party in Ottawa Goes Virtual
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Every December, Meeka Kakudluk eagerly anticipates the annual Christmas party hosted by Tungasuvvingat Inuit (TI) in Ottawa, which is the largest gathering of its kind for the Inuit community. This year, however, the celebration will be entirely online to include those outside the city, a decision that has disappointed attendees like Kakudluk and Sytukie Joamie, who value the traditional in-person festivities. Both express concern over the lack of access for those who struggle with technology and suggest a hybrid approach would have been more inclusive. The virtual event will occur from December 8 to 12, featuring online games and prizes, but many believe it won’t capture the essence of their cherished Christmas traditions.
