Khartoum, Sudan – Amid ongoing conflict between the Sudanese military and the Rapid Support Forces, Iman Abdel-Azim had to bury her brother in her courtyard due to inaccessible cemeteries. In early December, Khartoum State initiated a campaign to exhume makeshift graves, led by local committees and forensic specialists, aiming to alleviate families’ psychological burdens. However, challenges such as a shortage of body bags hinder progress, with the campaign expected to conclude by 2026. The situation remains dire as many bodies, including those on the streets, pose public health risks.
