‘Highest price for war’: Russia lost 430,000 soldiers in 2024, says Ukraine

In 2024, Russia made incremental advances in Ukraine’s eastern region of Donetsk, capturing 4,168 sq km of land. However, these gains were slow and costly, with over 400,000 Russian soldiers reported dead or wounded. Despite the sacrifices, Russian forces failed to make significant strategic gains. Ukrainian forces inflicted high casualties on the Russians, leading to losses of over 430,000 soldiers in 2024. Russia also recruited North Korean fighters, but suffered heavy losses among them as well. The war in Ukraine has strained Russia’s economy, with Putin prioritizing manpower for the conflict over workers for the economy.
