Health authorities warn of rising Mpox cases compared to last year

A rise in Mpox cases in Western Australia (WA) has led to a total of 36 reported infections this year, surpassing the total cases recorded in 2025, which was 28. WA health authorities have issued a warning regarding the viral infection, which spreads through close physical contact, including skin-to-skin and intimate contact, as well as contact with contaminated materials. While most cases this year have been among gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with men, several infections have also been noted in heterosexual individuals. Symptoms of Mpox can include fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, fatigue, and a painful rash or skin lesions. Health officials emphasize the importance of early testing, vaccination, and safe practices to limit the spread of the virus.

Why It Matters

The increase in Mpox cases reflects a growing public health concern, particularly considering the infection’s transmission dynamics through close contact. Historically, Mpox has primarily affected specific high-risk groups, but its spread to a broader population signals potential changes in transmission patterns. Vaccination, which is available for free to individuals at higher risk, is a critical tool in controlling outbreaks. Awareness and prompt medical assessment for symptoms are essential in preventing further infections and protecting vulnerable communities.
