Canterbury is experiencing an early summer heatwave, with temperatures reaching nearly 30°C. By early afternoon, Christchurch recorded 28°C, significantly higher than the average November maximum of 19.4°C. MetService meteorologist Alwyn Bakker noted that Christchurch is expected to be the warmest among major cities, with Ashburton and Kaikōura close behind at 27°C and 26°C, respectively.
