Google discontinues Project Mariner

Google has officially discontinued Project Mariner, an experimental tool intended to automate tasks across the web. The project, which was launched in December 2024, allowed users to delegate up to ten tasks at once. Following its shutdown on May 4, 2026, Google has integrated elements of the project’s technology into other AI applications, such as Gemini Agent and its AI Mode search feature. Earlier this year, Google introduced a new “auto-browse” feature in Chrome that performs complex tasks, although it is unclear if this feature directly relates to Project Mariner. The shutdown of Project Mariner may pave the way for other AI innovations expected to be unveiled at the upcoming I/O conference on May 19.

Why It Matters

The discontinuation of Project Mariner reflects Google’s strategy to streamline its AI offerings by consolidating technologies into more established products. Since its introduction, Project Mariner aimed to enhance user experience by automating online tasks, a growing trend among tech companies. As competition intensifies in the AI space, particularly with tools from OpenAI and other emerging platforms, integrating successful features from discontinued projects may help Google maintain its edge in the market. The upcoming I/O conference is anticipated to showcase Google’s latest advancements, further emphasizing its commitment to artificial intelligence.
