The U.S. CDC reports a spike in cases of a genital fungus, Trichophyton mentagrophytes genotype VII, in New York City, primarily among men who have sex with men. The fungus causes genital tinea or “jock itch,” which can lead to inflamed, painful lesions and may be confused with other skin conditions. Health officials recommend prolonged treatment with antifungal medications to successfully treat the infection.
