Satisfaction with the Far North District Council’s management of dogs declined significantly from 35 percent in 2022 to 16 percent in 2024, leading to a rise in aggressive and unsocialized dogs being euthanized. Mayor Moko Tepania blames irresponsible owners for the increase and calls for a break in the code of silence protecting them, urging owners to take better care of their pets. Sixty-two percent of impounded dogs in the Far North have not been claimed, highlighting the need for more responsible pet ownership in the community.
