Feds announce forum on antisemitism following incidents at Jewish school and synagogue

The federal government will hold a national forum in February to combat antisemitism following incidents of a suspicious fire at a Montreal synagogue and gunshots at a Toronto Jewish girls school. Newly appointed Minister of Official Languages Rachel Bendayan announced the forum, which will be co-chaired by Justice Minister Arif Virani and Public Safety Minister David McGuinty. Hate crimes against Jewish people have been on the rise in Canada, with Statistics Canada reporting 900 police-reported incidents in 2023, prompting Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to condemn the recent antisemitic acts and call for justice.
