EU and UK impose sanctions on Russians for deporting Ukrainian children

Russian institutions and officials have been accused of systematically deporting and indoctrinating Ukrainian children during the war on Ukraine. The European Union and United Kingdom have imposed sanctions on 23 state institutions and individuals involved in deporting nearly 20,500 Ukrainian children since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. The sanctions include asset freezes and travel bans, targeting those responsible for subjecting children to pro-Russian indoctrination and military-oriented activities. The International Criminal Court has also issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin for the illegal deportation of children from Ukraine.

Why It Matters

The accusations of systemic deportation and indoctrination of Ukrainian children by Russian institutions and officials are grave violations of international law. The sanctions imposed by the EU and UK signal a strong response to these actions, highlighting the importance of protecting children in conflict zones and holding perpetrators accountable. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine continues to have devastating effects on the most vulnerable populations, including children who are being forcibly removed from their homes and exposed to harmful ideologies.
