What You Need to Know
• The Democratic Republic of Congo has started vaccinating against Ebola, prioritizing health workers and front-line staff.
• The vaccine being used is licensed for a different strain, with uncertain effectiveness against the Bundibugyo strain.
• As of now, the DRC has reported 5,713 confirmed Ebola cases and 2,744 deaths in the ongoing outbreak.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has initiated an Ebola vaccination campaign, focusing on health workers and other front-line personnel. The vaccine currently being distributed is licensed for a different strain of the virus, and its effectiveness against the Bundibugyo strain remains unverified. Over 50,000 doses have been received, with the first injections administered in the city of Kisangani. The outbreak is primarily concentrated in the Ituri province, which borders Uganda, and has led to 5,713 confirmed cases and 2,744 deaths. The World Health Organization has approved 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine for use in the DRC, with 20,000 doses allocated for clinical trials to assess their effectiveness against the Bundibugyo strain. Health workers have called for additional doses to combat the outbreak, which is exacerbated by challenging conditions such as insecurity and population displacement.

Why It Matters

The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the DRC is the deadliest in the country’s history, surpassing previous outbreaks in severity. The Bundibugyo strain has no approved vaccine or treatment, making the current vaccination efforts critical. The situation is complicated by factors such as a health workers’ strike and significant population movements, which hinder effective response measures. Historical data shows that the 2014-2016 West Africa Ebola outbreak resulted in over 11,000 deaths, highlighting the urgent need for effective containment strategies in the DRC.
