Syria warns that Israeli actions threaten regional stability

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ibrahim Olabi, accused Israel of heightening regional tensions during a UN Security Council meeting. He claimed that Israel’s military actions, including eight airstrikes on the Abu al-Duhur air base and ongoing incursions into Syrian territory, jeopardize Syria’s efforts to combat terrorism and drug trafficking. Olabi emphasized Syria’s commitment to stability and restraint despite these attacks and criticized Israel’s presence on Mount Hermon as a violation of international law. He called for an end to Israeli assaults and a withdrawal from occupied territories, reaffirming that the Golan Heights is recognized as Syrian land. Olabi warned that continued Israeli aggression could lead to broader conflict, linking it to the political strategies of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Why It Matters

This situation is significant due to its implications for regional security and stability. The Golan Heights, which Israel captured in the 1967 Six-Day War and annexed in 1981, is a point of contention between the two nations. Israel’s military operations in Syria have been frequent, often justified by the need to counter perceived threats from Iranian-backed groups. The ongoing conflict in Syria has already displaced millions and created a humanitarian crisis, making any escalation between Israel and Syria potentially destabilizing for the entire region. The historical context of occupation and disputed territories continues to fuel tensions, complicating efforts for peace and security.
