In 2018, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin agreed to begin peace talks to end the war in Ukraine following a 90-minute phone call, without the involvement of Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Trump expressed the need to stop the millions of deaths in the war and emphasized working together closely with Putin, leading to negotiations starting immediately. However, American defence secretary Pete Hegseth stated that Ukrainian Nato membership was off the table and returning to pre-2014 borders was unrealistic, with UK defence secretary John Healey advocating for Ukraine eventually joining Nato.
