Thaioronióhte Dan David, a pioneering Kanien’kehá:ka journalist and co-founder of the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network (APTN), passed away on January 12 at the age of 73 after battling cancer. Known as the “father of APTN News,” David significantly impacted Indigenous journalism, advocating for accurate representation following the distorted media coverage during the Oka Crisis in 1990. He also contributed to the South African Broadcasting Corporation post-apartheid, mentoring many Indigenous journalists throughout his nearly 50-year career. David was celebrated for his humility, humor, and dedication to teaching, leaving a lasting legacy in journalism and education.
