In a groundbreaking discovery, wildlife researchers captured and published a photo of the critically endangered Upemba Lechwe antelope, with only 10 individuals spotted during an aerial survey in the Kamalondo Depression, indicating a population below 100. Led by Manuel Weber, the research highlighted the antelope’s unique features, such as the lack of dark stripes on its legs and patches on its shoulders, while emphasizing the urgent need for conservation efforts due to threats from human activities. This marks the first survey attempt of the species in over 50 years, underscoring the critical state of its existence.
