At least five people were killed and several wounded when gunmen opened fire on tourists in Pahalgam, Kashmir, prompting condemnation from regional Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who described the attack as unprecedented against civilians. The incident occurred in Baisaran, a scenic meadow near Pahalgam, and has led to a significant deployment of army and police forces to secure the area and pursue the assailants. Although no group has claimed responsibility, the region has a history of insurgency since 1989, with violence having declined in recent years.
