What You Need to Know
• India has over 360 million people aged 15 to 29, the largest youth population globally.
• The unemployment rate for young graduates in India is nearly four times higher than for non-youth.
• Only 3.7% of graduates and post-graduates in India secured white-collar jobs, according to the report.
India’s youth population, led by the State of Working India 2026 report from Azim Premji University, faces significant employment challenges. Despite improvements in education enrollment and the rise of private colleges and vocational training institutes, the transition from education to employment remains difficult, particularly for graduates. Unemployment rates among young people are nearly four times higher than those for older individuals, with graduate unemployment remaining around 35-40% for the past 25 years. In 1983, only 4% of individuals aged 20 to 29 were graduates, compared to 28% in 2023, with 67% of those graduates unemployed. The report highlights that while five million graduates enter the job market annually, only about 2.8 million find employment, revealing a significant gap in job availability for educated youth.
Why It Matters
This issue is significant as it highlights the disconnect between educational attainment and job opportunities in India. With a rapidly growing youth population, the country faces challenges in providing adequate employment for graduates. Historical data shows that while educational outcomes have improved, the job market has not kept pace, leading to high levels of graduate unemployment. The findings underscore the need for reforms in education quality and job creation strategies to better align with the demands of the workforce.
